How to Determine Your 2019 Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG)

We're now only weeks away from starting a new year, which means it's the ideal time to get really clear on our business goals for 2019.

And one of the most proven ways to knocking your year out of the park is by determining your overarching BHAG  short for Big Hairy Audacious Goal.

The concept was first described by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in their book Built to Last in the mid-1990s, but it has stuck around ever since. Why? Because it works.

What's Your 2019 BHAG?

You may have already had some ideas floating around in your mind, but in order for you to know which one is your BHAG, you'll have to consider a few factors.

First, a BHAG should be your main goal for the year, one big enough that feels ambitious, but will require several smaller steps and goals in order for you to achieve. And one of the best ways to test if it's the right fit is to use RUMBAT:

R - Results-oriented
U - Understandable
M - Measurable
B - Beyond average
A - Achievable
T - Time bound

Your big hairy audacious goal should first be results-oriented: not based on feelings, emotions, or ideas, but on something that can actually be acted upon or achieved. It should also be understandable and not too complex for you to remember or focus on regularly throughout the year.

A BHAG shouldn't be an average number you know you've hit before; it should be greater than this, something to strive for. But that doesn't mean it isn't achievable. Setting the bar too high can leave you feeling less motivated, since the goal may feel impossible.

Here are some questions to help you determine if you have the right BHAG for 2019:

  1. Does it give you an emotional charge? Do you feel excited about it or can you imagine what it would feel like once you accomplish it?
  2. Does it scare you a little? Is it just beyond anything you've ever accomplished before?
  3. Does it motivate you? Does it build up your mental game? What mental toughness strategy will you need after the initial rush wears off?

First Steps to Setting the Year Up for Success

Once you've determined your BHAG, there are a few key actions you'll need to take in order to ensure the best chances of you achieving all that you dream of.

Be sure to put it down in writing. Whether it's in a document you keep open in your computer, a notepad laid out on your desk, or a note you hang on your office wall, move the goal from inside your mind to something you can visually see every day.

Next, you'll want to consider your mental game: what mental toughness strategy will you need to keep you motivated long after the initial rush wears off? What reminders will you have? What can you do to keep your eyes on the prize?

What habits will you need to build or change in order to achieve your BHAG? Write these down as action plans with deadlines scheduled throughout the year to help keep you on track.
