Best Ways to Differentiate Yourself as an Entrepreneur

In the world of entrepreneurship, you may be one of thousands who offer a particular service or product. And if you want to be one of the best in the business, you’ll need to motivate others to pay you over your competition.

But how? The answer: stand out from the crowd.

Here are some of the top ways to differentiate yourself as an entrepreneur over the next few years.

Find a Niche

If you really want to grow your business fast and sustainably, you should make sure you’re not trying to be everything to everyone. Just because you can help everyone doesn’t mean you should.

Here’s the thing about that approach: you become less memorable and harder for others to refer business to.

Instead, you might say, “I work with businesses in the professional and legal service sectors,” or “My ideal clients are couples who are purchasing their first home together.” By focusing on a particular audience, segment, or industry, you become easier to distinguish from others who are more “generic.” Be sure to also take some time to work on your branding so that it matches this niche audience as well.

Don’t Bash the Competition

This may seem counter-intuitive, but talking bad about others (especially within your own industry) is one of the quickest ways to leave those around you a bad taste in their mouths about your business.

Although you may not want to go around bragging about the great work your competitors are doing, you can get an edge and differentiate yourself without putting them down. When you hear stories from those in your network or potential clients about bad experiences they’ve had with your competition, you might consider saying something like this instead: “I am so sorry to hear that on behalf of our industry.”

You can also offer some insight to your connections about how those situations are rare, and provide examples of how you and others you know in the industry can help. And if you know someone who is in the same line of work as you is better at a certain niche, refer business to them that doesn’t align with your own niche or ideal clientele!

Be a Trusted Resource

Distinguish yourself from “just another ______ (CPA/lawyer/marketer/business owner/etc)” by supporting those around you whenever you can. Be open and transparent about the work you do, offer information and education on your services or industry, and ask how you can help others as needed. This can allow others to see you as the go-to for certain questions, challenges, and services/products - before they reach out to your competitors!
